Pond Weed Control

02 Jun 2011

For most small lakes and ponds, a small amount of aquatic plants like cattails are an attractive addition. All too often these pleasant plants become pesky pests and you need a pond weed control solution to keep them from overrunning your pond. Pond weed control is achievable with a step-by-step process.

First, you need to identify the aquatic plants you are trying to control. Knowing the name is a good start, but the important factor to key-in on is how it grows. There are three main types of higher order aquatic plants, and determining which ones you want to target is vital to proper control.

  • Submerged plants grow exclusively underwater. They may have blooms that break the surface, but most of the time they are below the waves.
  • Floating plants have no anchor to the ground in any way. They are free floating and their roots lay wholly in the water. They are not to be confused with emergent plants that float on the surface; see below.
  • Emergent plants grow in the shallows of your pond. Their roots are in the ground and they grow well above the water line, or float on the surface. The important characteristic is that the roots are in the ground and not dangling in the water.
