Pond Problems: Pond Film

14 Aug 2016

In the heat of the summer we often get complaints about pond film.  Customers will have a beautiful body of water and then they will be plagued with a thin layer of scum on the surface of the pond.  In order, to get control of your pond film you need to identify what is causing the surface film.

Pond film is usually algae or pollen.  If the pond film has a green, blue, or red tint than the pond film is caused by algae.  If the surface of your pond is white, then the film is being caused by pollen and debris.

Surface Film

This problem will come and go throughout the season.  We have some recommendations to help minimize the unsightly film, but the film will surge back in between treatments.  If the film you have is an algae, we recommend using a liquid pond algaecide to knock back the growth.  You will want to treat ½ of the pond at a time.  For a 1 acre pond mix 1 gallon of Crystal Plex with a couple gallons of water and spray ½ the pond.  Wait 5 days and do the same thing to the other side.

Another product we highly recommend is Pond Glass.  This product will help break the surface tension that is allowing the debris to sit on the surface of the pond.  Pond Glass will need to be applied weekly or as the problem returns.  This is the product we recommend using if pollen is the cause of your surface pond scum.  Pond Glass can be used at the rate of 1 gallon of Pond Glass with 3 gallons of water.  Spray this mixture over the surface of the water.  1 gallon of Pond Glass with treat approximately 21,700 square feet (1/2 acre).

Nature has a way of helping out sometimes too.  After a heavy rainfall pond surface film will disappear.  However, after a week or so with no rainfall the film often returns.

Crystal Plex and Pond Glass can be used simultaneously.  For additional help contact Sanco Industries.
