Pond Maintenance Tips

17 Jan 2011

Pond maintenance...a lot of people would probably cringe after hearing those words. People think that pond maintenance is a very lengthy project that requires getting dirty and wet.  Pond maintenance is only dirty and time consuming when you let your pond get really bad. If you keep on top of your pond maintenance, you can enjoy the recreational activities your pond provides.  Here are some helpful pond maintenance tips to help make your pond an enjoyable retreat.

Pond Maintenance Tip #1: Use Pond Dye
Putting a dye in your pond, will keep your pond looking great, and overall is a good thing to do. A good way to tell if there is enough dye in your pond is to hold a paper plate about 12 inches under the surface of the water a couple feet out and make sure there is a good colored tint against the white of the plate.

Pond Maintenance Tip #2: Use Pond Bacteria
The use of beneficial pond bacteria is key in a healthy aquatic environment.  Beneficial pond bacteria will consume the organic waste like dead weeds and algae, fish waste, and grass clippings.  If you can minimize the amount of organic material in your pond you can minimize the amount of growth.

Pond Maintenance Tip #3: You Will Have To Use an Algaecide
Algaecides are another imperative part of your pond maintenance. One thing I can’t stand is seeing a nice pond that is absolutely covered in algae or has algae mats all over it. Yes, algae can seem like it pops up overnight and is sometime very hard to control, but, the time to spray your algae is when you see it starting to form under the water towards the edge of the pond. If you can just spray the algae as it’s forming and spot treat, than you’re going to save yourself time, money, and frustration.
