Pond Maintenance

14 Aug 2014

Sanco has been helping pond owners maintain their ponds since 1991.  Pond maintenance can seem like a daunting and overwhelming task to a new pond owner.  We have found that an important first step when coaching customers about how to maintain their pond is to manage their expectations.

Ponds are natural bodies of water that will have growth and life when they are healthy.  Ponds aren’t swimming pools.  Ponds have everything needed to support plant life: light, water, and nutrients.  A pond with some growth is a sign of a healthy body of water and plant life should be managed not eradicated.

The key to a healthy pond is pond maintenance.  Using products like pond dye and pond bacteria will help slow down growth and make it more manageable.  Pond maintenance products should be used every 30 days or so.  Once you get growth (algae or weeds) you need to identify the growth in order to get the correct product to manage it.  Pond algae and weed treatments are usually done every 30 days in the start and the end of the season but every two weeks during the warmest months.
