Pond maintenance is tricky because there are so many different variables that can make one pond different from another.  For example: depth of pond, what the banks are made of (rocks, cattails, grass, dirt), amount of precipitation, how much fertilizer run-off, etc…  Even though there is not one solution for every pond there are basic pond maintenance tips you can follow to maximize the work you put into your pond.

  1. Do not fertilize close to your pond
  2. Do not throw grass clippings and debris into your pond
  3. Do not over feed fish
  4. Use pond dyes year round
  5. Use beneficial pond bacteria to neutralize nitrates and phosphates and to consume organic material on the bottom of your pond
  6. Monitor your pond on a daily basis so you can catch problem weeds and algae before they take over
  7. Make sure you properly identify your weeds and algaeTreat existing growth quickly with the proper product to maintain control

Pond maintenance should be at the very least a monthly chore.  During the warm summer months you may have to treat every 2 weeks.  For more information on pond maintenance Contact our helpful staff.
