Pond Ice Safety

Many people with ponds use their pond for recreation year round.  There are specific safety precautions you take when you are using your pond in the summer and you should do the same in the winter.  Winter activities like ice skating and ice fishing can turn tragic if you don't consider the following ice safety tips.  

 

First, when going on the ice always have someone with you. Second, wear a life vest and have ice claws.  Lastly, you should know how to read the ice. This doesn't mean you need your masters in Geology:).

 

Ice should be inspected every time you go out on your pond.  Drill holes through the ice to inspect the quality and thickness.  If the pond ice has a chunky consistency its density is higher and it is stronger.  If the ice is flaky the ice is less dense and will be weaker.  Safe ice looks clear with a blue/clear color.  If you are ice skating or ice fishing the ice thickness should be 5 inches to support the weight of a human.  In order to drive snowmobiles or ATV's onto pond ice, the ice should be at least 7 inches thick.
