Pond Fish Stocking

22 Nov 2010
Knowing the quantity and type of fish to stock in your pond is important to maintain the health of the fish and your pond.

Pond stocking shouldn’t be taken lightly!  If you over populate or have certain types of fish it can turn your beautiful pond into a nightmare.  For example, over population can create diseased fish and fish with sores and abrasions.  Certain fish require more specific water quality standards that a hatchery will know about, but you should be asking these questions when you go to the hatchery.  Another important tip when stocking your pond is that some fish are very sensitive to standard pond treatment products that contain Copper Sulfate, the main product used to treat algae.  Copper Sulfate is toxic to Koi, Goldfish, and Trout.
Hatcheries supply many types of fish and can help with your pond stocking.  A little research will pay off in the long run when stocking your pond.  Have a list of pond stocking questions for your hatchery.

Here are pond stocking recommendations for an average one acre pond:

  • Fathead Minnows 1-3” – 20pounds
  • Golden Shiners 2-5” – 15pounds
  • Largemouth Bass 3-4” – 200
