Pond Fish Kill Prevention

02 May 2011

Many people believe that a fish kill is caused by harmful chemicals that are put into a pond. But, in fact, it is caused by the oxygen levels in the pond rapidly decreasing. If someone has a pond that is completely covered in plant growth and its and the hot summer temperatures rise it is a smart idea to slowly kill off your algae and weeds.  By killing off around 1/3 of the algae at a time in those hot and dry climates you are maximizing your chances of not having a fish kill. Algae gives off oxygen into the pond so by killing all of the algae at once could have detrimental effects. The best thing to do for your pond is to install an aerator. By forcing oxygen into your pond you don’t have to dread playing the oxygen game when it’s time to treat your pond.

Best ways to prevent fish kill:

  • Treat a portion of your pond at a time when killing weeds and algae
  • Avoid treatment on extremely hot sunny days
  • Install an aeration system
