Pond Dye

24 Apr 2011

The natural colors of water that we think of, blue and green, bestow the look of pristine inviting water. Many backyard ponds, bigger than a koi pond, can run into trouble by having brownish or muddy opaqueness. Barring other pond problems like algae blooms or aquatic weeds, application of a quality pond dye can achieve the desired effect.

Why use pond dye at all? Environmental and geological properties of your pond may lend them to be brown or gray. The use of a pond dye will resolve this problem. If applied as instructed, blue pond dyes are food-grade colorants that are safe for humans, passing animals, and aquatic animals such as fish.

What if I have algae blooms or aquatic weeds? Pond dyes are not the recommended treatment for these pond problems. While some chemical manufacturers will promote blue pond dye as a solution, it is better to use chemicals specifically designed to combat these pesky plants. Simply identify the problem plant in your pond and use the appropriate algaecide or herbicide to reduce its numbers.
