Pond Duckweed Control

14 Apr 2011

Pond duckweed is one of the most difficult weeds to control. It is very resistant to many herbicides that are used for aquatic applications.  Diquat dibromide is the most successful herbicide I have used to date. Diquat dibromide is an aquatic approved herbicide that can be used on land weeds and submerged aquatic weeds. Sanco Industries manufactures a diquat based product called Tsunami DQ. This product can handle pond duckweed issues as long as it is applied correctly.

In order to have an effective kill on pond duckweed you must follow the application rates for the maximum dosage.  The max dosage for Tsunami DQ is 2 gallons per surface acre.  It is also easiest to treat when the duckweed has been blown to one side of the pond.  A surfactant is highly recommended so the herbicide will stick to the waxy surface of the pond duckweed.

Once you have killed the duckweed you should start preventative maintenance regimen.  Preventative pond maintenance consists of apply pond dye and beneficial pond bacteria.  Pond weeds like duckweed thrive in ponds that have excessive nutrients.   Using beneficial pond bacteria will help neutralize the nitrates and phosphates.
