Pond Care Procedure

02 Jan 2011
Correct pond care procedure requires certain guidelines to be followed.  In order to manage your pond with success, be sure to follow these simple guidelines.
The first thing you should know about your pond is the size and volume of your pond.  Using satellite maps, you can determine your surface area.  This will help in figuring out the amount of material needed to maintain your pond.  You will also need to take several depth measurements and average them together.  This will figure out the volume of water to be treated.  Sometimes you need to know the surface area for correct pond product use and sometimes you will need to know the approximate volume of the pond for correct pond product use (the label will let you know!).  That is why you should make these two measurements a priority in your pond care procedure manual.

The second thing you should know about your pond is the run-off area to establish an effective pond care procedure.  Be sure to check to see if drainage pipes or ditches are dumping water into your pond.  Check to see the steepness of the banks leading to your pond.  These are important in judging what potential products are entering your pond from the surrounding area.

Third, consider adding products that are preventative in nature.  Pond dyes and pond bacteria can be added early on and will aid in reducing your pond problems.  An aerator/bubbler or fountain can add oxygen and movement to the water column.  These items will aid in limiting algae and weed growth and keep your pond from building up troublesome muck.

Finally, knowing the types of algae and weeds that are in your pond will save you money by guiding you to purchase the correct products for treating these problems.

To sum up, using sound pond care strategies will save you money and will aid in keeping your pond from growing all sorts of vile weeds and algae.
