Pond Algae

23 Jul 2014

Oscillatoria is a form of pond algae that is extremely chemically resistant and one of the oldest types of pond algae.  The look of oscillatoria alone could make a person lose their appetite!  Here are some tips from Sanco to help prevent the growth of oscillatoria and tips to treat it if you get this slimy pond scum.

Pond Algae

Prevention of oscillatoria consists of allowing some other weeds to grow in controlled areas around your pond.  Regular recreational use of a pond can help prevent oscillatoria.  Use pond dye and pond bacteria consistently.  Regular use of copper sulfate products early in the spring can help prevent the growth.

Once you have oscillatoria you will have to follow these steps to keep it at bay.  Use a combination of manual removal and high doses of copper sulfate treatments.  Because oscillatoria is resistant to chemicals this is no guarantee but the best chance to get ahead of it.  Also note that if your pond has current oxygen issues you may not want to use this high of a dose of copper.  If you have an aeration system keep it running while treating.  Use 10 lbs of copper sulfate granular diluted into a couple gallons of hot water with ½ a gallon of Crystal Plex, and spray your pond.   During the warm months June- August you will want to slowly work your way up to this treatment.
