NPK Fertilizer

13 Jan 2011

Spring will be upon us before you know it so you want to make sure you are ready to grow the best tomatoes on the block.  Much is discussed about the best fertilizer to use to maximize the growth of your tomato plants.  The main nutrients in a tomato fertilizer are (N) nitrogen, (P) phosphorus, and (K) potassium.  Even though many fertilizers are NPK fertilizers; they can vary greatly and either enhance your tomato plant or destroy it.  Each one of these nutrients contributes something different to the health of your plant.

Nitrogen is known for its ability to make a plant very green; therefore if you were fertilizing your lawn you would want a significant amount of Nitrogen.  It terms of tomato growth most are more concerned with more abundant fruit growth.

Phosphorus in an NPK fertilizer is responsible for healthy roots especially during blooming and seed set.  If the pH of the soil is off your plant may not get any phosphorus.

Potassium in an NPK fertilizer is important for the general health of the plant and can help resist disease.  If your plant lacks potassium you may have small fruit and an overall sickly looking plant.

When you are looking for a NPK fertilizer make sure you know what effect each of these nutrients is going to have and what type of plant you are using the NPK fertilizer for.  Sanco Industries has a NPK fertilizer specifically formulated for tomato plants called TNT Tomato Booster.  TNT Tomato Booster is a 5-16-12 fertilizer, which focuses on enhancing the root and fruit growth and not so much on the leaf growth.
