Maintaining Pond Sludge

23 May 2011

Pond owners often don’t realize the importance of maintaining pond sludge until it is too late.  Pond sludge is organic material that collects on your pond floor.  This organic material is comprised of fish waste, leaves, grass clippings, and dead weeds and algae.  If you do nothing to combat the materials that are collecting on your pond floor they will continue to pile up.  This abundance of material becomes pond sludge and muck that feed future weed and algae blooms.

Pond sludge is virtually the best fertilizer you could give your weeds and algae; therefore if you do not maintain your pond sludge you are bound to have weeds and algae. Maintaining pond sludge will prevent aggressive weeds and algae, keep your pond from having a foul odor, and improve the overall quality of water.

Sanco Industries provides two pond sludge removal products.

-Natural Pond Cleaner is a maintenance dose of beneficial pond bacteria.  This product should be used on a monthly basis to help maintain your pond sludge.

-Muck Doctor is recommended for beach, dock and shoreline areas that have a significant build up of muck.  This beneficial pond bacteria is more concentrated and faster acting than the Natural Pond Cleaner.  Muck Doctor will consume inches of pond sludge.

All beneficial pond bacteria products perform better in well aerated water.  The higher the oxygen levels are in your pond the more active the bacteria will be.  Aerators are good for the overall health of the pond and for fish health.
