Liquid Pond Dye vs. Dry Packs

27 Feb 2011

Currently there are two forms of pond dye available in the retail market today:  liquid and dry packs.  One of the most common questions I hear is the following:  which one should I use in my pond?

The bottom line is that each product has its advantages and disadvantages.

Liquid pond dyes have several advantages that make them the choice of many homeowners.  First, the liquid form disperses very quickly, usually completely mixing in a couple of hours.  Another advantage is the ease of applying measured portions instead of the entire container.  This aids the homeowner when he/she simply wants to refresh the colorant when needed.  Of course, the price of the liquid dye is usually less expensive than the price of dry packs.  Disadvantages include the larger chance of getting colorant all over you or your shoreline and the fact that the liquid can freeze in below freezing storage areas.

Dry pond dye packs were designed with the liquid dyes disadvantages in mind.  Obviously, the dry packs are cleaner and easier to use.  They can be stored in freezing conditions.  They reduce the chance of getting dye on the shoreline, since they can be tossed out in deeper water.  There are a couple of disadvantages to consider with dye packs.  They are a little more expensive (they contain straight dye concentrate and no water).  The pack must be used all at one time, so there is no way to freshen the color with a smaller dose.

Both products are excellent for homeowners to utilize to add dye to their pond.  It just depends on what matters most to the customer as to which form of dye should be used.
