Killing Pond Algae

05 Jun 2016

We have been manufacturing pond treatment products since 1991.  We always encourage pond owners to use preventative pond maintenance products like pond dye and pond bacteria to help keep growth maintained.  However, we know people get busy and pond algae may get ahead of you.  If this is you, we recommend going ahead and applying your pond dye and bacteria. Applying these products will help slow down the growth that hasn’t surfaced.

Killing pond algae isn’t as daunting as you may think.  Once you have your dye and bacteria in the pond; you are ready to kill the existing algae.  There are two different products you can use to kill pond algae, Crystal Plex and Copper Sulfate.

Crystal Plex is a liquid algaecide that kills a broader variety of algae.  You always want to treat ½ of your pond at a time.  For a 1 acre pond with an average depth of 4-6 feet mix a gallon of Crystal Plex with 3-4 gallons of water (the water is just to help you spread the product) and spray ½ of your pond.  Wait 5 days and do the same application to the other side.

Copper Sulfate is a granular algaecide and can be applied in several different ways: broadcast copper crystals, dilute crystals in water and spray, or place crystals in burlap sack and drag behind boat until dissolved.  We recommend diluting copper sulfate in hot water and spraying.  1.5 lbs mixed with 2 gallons of water will treat approximately 10,000 square feet.

Algae applications work best when there is no rain for about 8 hours and the water temperatures are at least 50°F.  For more information contact the pond experts at Sanco.
