Killing Pond Algae

19 Apr 2011

When killing pond algae there are some precautions you should take to keep you and your fish safe.  Copper Sulfate is the best product to use for killing pond algae.  Sanco Industries offers two different forms of copper sulfate, granular and liquid, both of which are safe when used properly.

When using liquid copper sulfate to kill pond algae make sure you are not spraying into the wind.  Sanco’s liquid copper, Crystal Plex, can irritate eyes, skin, and damage clothing directly out of the bottle.  Once diluted into your pond the copper is 100% safe and can actually help swimmers itch.

The granular copper has similar effects and you should use the same precautions, in addition, avoid inhaling the powder when pouring the granules.  When you use copper sulfate to kill your pond algae you should wear safety glasses, old clothing, and long sleeves to ensure protection.

Fish safety is also another concern when killing pond algae.  The one thing you will want to do to keep your fish safe is to only treat a portion of the pond at a time to avoid oxygen depletion.  However, there are some species of fish that are very sensitive to copper sulfate like koi, goldfish, and trout.  Sanco recommends that you do not use copper sulfate to kill you pond algae if you have these fish.
