Gypsum and Pond Bacteria

13 Aug 2014

How does gypsum affect the bacteria in Natural Pond Cleaner, Muck Dr., or Excavate?

Gypsum is a common name of calcium sulfate.  It, along with hydrated limestone and aluminum sulfate (alum) are utilized to remove sediment (mainly clay) from the water column, thereby reducing a pond’s turbidity (muddy appearance) and clarifying it.

Does this product cause any issues with the pond environment, especially the beneficial pond bacteria that break down muck?  The short answer is no.  If gypsum is applied at the recommended rates, then no ill effects will occur to the pond environment.  Of course, these products could affect pH over time, so keeping an eye on pH after several applications of gypsum would be prudent.

In review, gypsum, hydrated limestone and alum are products for reducing turbidity in pond water.  Using these products as labeled should have no ill effects on beneficial bacteria.
