Green Pond Water: Planktonic Algae

21 Aug 2014

Green pond water is usually the result of a microscopic form of algae that is growing in your pond.  Planktonic algae can cause ponds to turn a vibrant green color, brown, or even have a green oil slick type film on the surface of the pond.

Sanco recommends using Crystal Plex algaecide to control planktonic algae.  Most pond owners do not treat planktonic algae correctly.  Crystal Plex should be used at the rate of 1 gallon per acre foot.  For example, if you have a 1 acre pond that is an average of 4 feet deep you should use 4 gallons of Crystal Plex to treat planktonic algae.  Some water may be needed to help spread the product, but the water is not used as a diluter.  Spray your mixture across the surface of your pond.  Depending on weather you may have to do a follow treatment.

During the warmest months pond owners should expect to treat for algae at least once a month or every other week if you aren’t using a colorant.  Using pond dye’s and pond bacteria can help slow down growth so that you do not have to use as much Crystal Plex.
