Green Pond Water

23 Feb 2011

The key to clearing up green pond water is to figure out what is causing it.  Ultimately you will use an algaecide like Sanco’s Crystal Plex to kill off the existing algae bloom, but if you do not pinpoint the cause you will continue to have a problem with green pond water.  A combination of aeration, pond dye, pond bacteria, and occasional algae treatments will be required to keep your green pond water under control.

Most green pond water is caused by two types of algae: The first one is floating single-celled organisms called phytoplankton, that are so tiny, they can pass through the tiniest of filters.  Believe it or not, in balanced conditions these can be good, providing food for other life forms in the pond. However, when the sunlight is right they can multiply by the millions.  There can be as much as 8000 of single-celled organisms per square inch. These infestations cause your pond to turn green and give off foul orders.  The second is string algae, or Filamentous species of algae. These can form thick mats that adhere to rocks and waterfalls.  Filamentous algae can double in size and weight in a very short amount of time.

Some of the factors that cause repeat algae blooms are too many nutrients (nitrogen), excessive sunlight, and lack of aeration in the pond are the most common reasons for algae blooms. When leaves fall in the pond they decompose at the bottom, these decomposing leaves provide algae with food.  Run off from surrounding banks contain fertilizer that fuel the growth of algae.  Algae blooms are at their worst in mid-summer because of the amount of sunlight a pond is getting and the warmth during this time of the year.  Lack of aeration can lead to stagnant water and a prime environment for algae to grow.

In the end, the best way to combat severe algae growth is to use a combination of preventative products like Crystal Blue pond dye, Natural Pond Cleaner beneficial pond bacteria, aeration systems, and an algaecide to control existing algae.
