Granular vs. Liquid Copper

23 Jun 2014

Pond algae is a problem that 9 out of 10 pond owners will have to deal with.  Many pond owners lump pond algae in one big category, but there are many varieties of algae that need to be identified so that they can be properly treated.

Copper sulfate is the best product to treat pond algae.  However, there are two types of copper products.  You can treat with raw granular copper, which is 99% or you can treat with a liquid copper product like Crystal Plex that is 19.8% copper.  I know what you are thinking…Why would I ever use the 19.8% copper product over the raw granular.

Even though the liquid copper is 19.8% copper it can control a larger variety of algae like chara and planktonic.  Another benefit to using the liquid is that it can remain active in the water column for a longer time than the granular.  One negative effect to using copper is that it can start building up in the soil.  Using Crystal Plex minimizes this risk because instead of using 99% copper you are using a fraction of that with the same results.   Copper granular is good for treating filamentous algae.  Filamentous algae usually appears in large mats on the water surface and looks like horse hair when picked up.
