Does Copper Treat Pond Weeds

27 Jun 2016

Sanco has been manufacturing and advising pond owners how to keep their ponds clean since 1991.  All too often we get callers that say they are using our copper sulfate and it isn’t killing their pond weeds…

Well…we say…that is because copper sulfate is not the product you use to kill pond weeds.  Copper is fantastic for algae but does very little for 95% of any variety of pond weed.  On certain occasions we may recommend mixing copper with an aquatic herbicide to kill a weed like Eurasion watermilfoil, but for the most part copper is for algae control in ponds not weed control.

Identifying what you have growing should be one of the first steps to treating pond growth.  Do you have algae or do you have pond weeds?  Pond weeds should be treated with an aquatic herbicide like Catt Plex or Tsunami DQ.

Algae or Weeds

Use Catt Plex on weeds that grow above the surface of the water like cattails and water lilies.  Use Tsunami DQ on weeds that grow below the surface of the water and/or float on the surface of the water like American pondweed and duckweed.
