Copper Sulfate Algae Control

09 May 2011

Treating a pond with copper sulfate for algae control should be done with care to avoid oxygen depletion and possible harm to your fish.  After using a copper sulfate algae control product you should notice the algae start to change a brownish or grayish white within about 24 hours.  This change in color is the first indication that the copper sulfate is killing the algae.  A heavy rainfall will sink the dead algae to the pond floor.

You can use up to 10 pounds of copper per acre when treating for algae.  Even though your pond is covered in thick algae mats you will only treat a portion of the pond.  Treating all of the algae mats the same day will cause serious oxygen depletion.

When treating with a copper sulfate algae control products, you will treat one third to one half of your pond at one time.  Cast the copper out evenly over the algae mats and then wait one week to treat the remaining half.  You will probably have to use copper sulfate algae control several times throughout the warmest months to keep algae growth under control.

Keep in mind copper sulfate is toxic to Koi, goldfish, and Trout.  If your pond contains any of these species you will want to find an alternative algae control product.
