Controlling String Algae

18 Jul 2013
String algae can be a menace. String algae falls under the category of filamentous algae and gets its name from its long wispy string- like look. It can be an eye sore and spread quickly to cover the entire pond. Fortunately, using copper sulfate products will rid your pond of this unsightly growth.
Sanco offers both liquid and granular copper sulfate. For a more concentrated solution use copper sulfate granular on actively growing algae mats. On the other hand, liquid copper sulfate is less concentrate, but remains active in the water column for longer. It is easy to use and will eliminate pesky algae, but remember that chara and planktonic algae are not affected by copper sulfate granulars. With filamentous algae, it is so effective that it is advised to only treat a third to half of your pond at a time because too much algae decomposition may deplete oxygen in your pond. Copper sulfate is the way to go in pond algae treatment because it’s fast acting and the most effective method.
