Control Duckweed

30 Jun 2014

Duckweed is one of the most difficult weeds to control, but can be done with the right products and proper application techniques.  Duckweed is difficult to control because it is not rooted and it is extremely small in size.

The product we recommend for treating duckweed is called Tsunami DQ.  Tsunami is a diquat based aquatic herbicide.  In order to effectively control duckweed you have to use the maximum dosage, which is 2 gallons per acre.

When you treat duckweed use these tips to conquer this pesky weed.  If you can… wait until the wind blows it into one area or cove and really hammer the growth hard by spraying the growth with Tsunami DQ.  Do not disturb the water as you are treating; you will wash the chemical off of the plant.   Be prepared to do another treatment.  It often takes more than one treatment to gain control.

You may also consider changing the environment in which the duckweed grows; duckweed thrives on nutrient rich, stagnant water.  Add pond bacteria products to minimize nutrients in the pond that are feeding the duckweed.  Clear shore line or add an aerator to get the water moving.
