Causes of Muddy Pond Water

22 Jul 2013

Nobody who has owned a pond has ever thought to themselves that they would like to have a pond that appears muddy.  Muddy pond water is a common problem in ponds.  Muddy pond water is aesthetically unpleasing and can turn visitors off from swimming in the water and basically enjoying it all together.  Fishing can be impacted as well from inhibiting the amount of sunlight present in the water which reduces the amount of growth in ponds, reducing the amount of food for fish ultimately leading to less fish.  Sanco Industries thinks that it is important that people are aware of the causes of muddy pond water.

Fish, ducks and geese can be a major contributor to muddy pond water.  Large populations of fish can cause muddy water due to feeding and reproduction traits in shallow water.  The frequent splashing and moving about from such water life stirs up bottom soils and mixes the soils with the water.  Another major contributor to muddy water is watershed factors.  Sometimes the clarity or overall health of pond water depends on what the area is like that is running off into the pond.  Ponds that receive water from nearby watersheds that are frequently disturbed from farming and or livestock can be a determinant in that mud running into ponds and causing water to be muddy and cloudy.
