Beneficial Pond Bacteria

11 Jan 2011

Putting bacteria in your pond can be extremely beneficial. Sanco Industries sells an all natural bacteria product called Natural Pond Cleaner. This beneficial pond bacteria eats away at any dead vegetation in the pond as well as feeds off the micronutrients that weeds and algae need to survive.

Beneficial bacteria are nature’s little housekeepers.  They target carbon sources in applications and release natural enzymes in proportion to the cell’s ability to degrade.  Beneficial bacteria are enzyme “factories” that provide an equilibrium that leaves little or no leftover material.

Free enzymes on the other hand, are not living organisms but catalysts that change the state of a compound, usually a solid to a combination of liquid and gas.  If there are microbes present with the free enzymes then the carbon source can be readily utilized by the cell.  The trouble with products formulated with free enzymes can be that the emulsification process that occurs may not be in equilibrium with the microbes that are present and their ability to degrade, consume, the material.  That’s why some municipalities ban the use of commercial drain or grease trap products that emulsify fats, oils, and grease, which free enzymes readily to.

Beneficial bacteria can be formulated with or without free enzymes, it just depends upon the intended application and what is best suited.

Bio products may or may not contain microbes sometimes the term “bio product” refers to a chemical formulation that contains only free enzymes and not microbes.
