Aquatic Weed Control Chemicals

31 Jan 2011

Whether your pond is for recreational use or serves as a retention pond a key component to its successful function are aquatic weed control chemicals, Aquatic weed control chemicals can re-establish the natural balance needed. While the need for aquatic weed control is important, the general function of a pond does dictate to some degree how to approach weed control.

Retention or Detention Ponds

The main function of these ponds is to filter contaminants and limit water flow into the water table. More aquatic plants and algae are generally tolerated due to their contribution to the efficiency of the pond. Addressing odor issues with excessive amounts of algae can be solved with recommended amounts of algaecide. Take care to not remove all the algae, or the pond's ability to naturally remove nutrients from the water will be compromised.

Recreational ponds

Swimming, boating, and fishing are all primary functions. Aesthetic beauty, water flow, and aquatic animal life are all needed. Monitor water quality regularly, especially for man-made ponds for rampant growth of aquatic plants and algae. When conditions warrant, administer herbicides to control emergent, submerged, and floating weeds. Add pond dye chemicals for aesthetics and aid to settle debris to the bottom.

Farm Ponds

Related to recreational ponds they can serve some of the same functions. The feeding of livestock and source for irrigation are additional jobs a farm pond can perform. Aquatic weed control is very important to maintain water quality and limit turbidity in water. Clearer water can be achieved with the elimination of excessive phytoplankton (a form of algae) with algaecide.
