Algaecide

12 Jan 2011

Algaecides control excessive amounts of algae that make your pond’s water an ugly green and produce offensive odors. That being said, you are usually treating a result of bigger problem. Normally algae perform a beneficial role of providing food for your pond’s fish and other factors to keep your pond’s ecosystem in balance.

Be on the lookout for underlying problems to your algae situation or your algaecide will have short-term effects:

  • Excessive runoff – Check for areas where nutrients are being introduced into your pond; agricultural fertilizers or too much lawn fertilizers. These products contain phosphates and nitrogen that algae love.
  • Shallow areas – These areas will warm faster and be warmer on average compared to deeper areas of your pond. Access to abundant sunlight and warmth will produce large amounts of algae in no time.
  • Low amounts of good bacteria – Beneficial bacteria normally keep algae from growing out of control. If the numbers of good bacteria dwindle, nutrients incorporate into the water. This gives algae the perfect incubator to multiply unchecked.

Be sure to identify the source of your problems, and then treatments of algaecide will have a more profound effect. Contact the experts at Sanco for help determining the amount and type of algaecide you need dependant on your unique situation.
