Weed & Algae Identification

Pond Plant Growth

One of the first steps to treating your pond plant growth is to properly identify what you have growing.  If you misidentify the growth you could be using/wasting a lot of money on chemicals that will give you no results.  Weeds and algae are not the same type of growth therefore you will not use the same product to kill both.  Some weeds can look like algae and some algae can look like weeds.  Please refer to the links below to visually compare your growth with a picture.

3 Main Types of Pond Plant Growth:
  • Algae- hair like growth, thick mats on water surface, or green water
  • Emerged Weeds- weeds that grow out of water like cattails and waterlilies
  • Submerged & Floating Weeds- weeds that grow under the water or on the surface like coontail and duckweed
  • Emerged Plants- weeds that grow up out of the water like water lilies, cattails, and shoreline grasses.
